When the “ALZHIR” prisoners planted 600 apple seedlings, the hares began to nibble their bark, as the winter turned out to be harsh and they had nothing to eat. The camp leadership then ordered that if at least one seedling was lost, they would begin to shoot the prisoners, after which the women decided to share the bread with the hares. Women left slices of bread near each seedling. Hares lifted these crumbs without touching the bark of the trees planted. By spring, the apple orchard was preserved. To date, the Akimat of the Tselinograd District has additionally allocated 1.5 hectares of land for growing an apple orchard, as a tribute to the victims of the ALZHIR camp.
